Chelsea has condemned supporters who were heard singing an anti-Semitic chant on Thursday night in Hungary after the club’s 2-2 draw with Vidi-FC in the Europa League.
When only three minutes were left, the first rendition of a song that refers to Tottenham disparagingly as ‘Yids’ began which was audible from the press box in a different stand. The Chelsea tourist fans complained about the social media against those who were sitting beside them for the act of racism.
This incident happened just days after four Chelsea supporters were banned from the remaining matches after their involvement in allegedly targeting Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling with racial abuse.
Chelsea strongly condemns own fans for the abhorrent racist gesture and urged them to ‘summon brainpower’.
“Any individuals who can’t summon the brain power to comprehend this simple message and are found to have shamed the club by using anti-Semitic or racist words or actions will face the strongest possible action from the club,” a Chelsea spokesperson said after the match.
Chelsea has made major steps to try and eradicate discriminatory behavior among their fan base including a campaign to raise awareness and educate about anti-Semitism in soccer, but they have had to face scandals over the past few years.
