The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that they have renamed the ICC World T20 as the ICC T20 World Cup, claiming that it would enhance the event’s profile.

The renaming decision is closely connected to the Global Cricket Strategy which will be launched in early 2019 in which the new format will be used to globalize the game. The new hopefully will enhance the game profile and ensure its status to be at par with the other pinnacle events of the ODI and Test format.

This announcement of renaming indicates the next editions of the events in 2020 in Australia will be known as the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020.

The ICC already declared that all T20s between its members will be granted the international status and also introduced a regional qualification process for all its 104 members.

All the international cricket captains backed the ICC’s decision of renaming the game. South Africa’s Faf du Plessis even hinted that the event in the last quarter of 2020, in Australia will be his last ICC event.

India’s women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur feels that this change in name is a natural progression.
