Andy Murray’s latest comeback from persistent hip issue was halted on Wednesday after he was outplayed by Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the second round of Brisbane international.
Former world No 1 Murray was beaten 7-5 6-2 in his second match of the tournament to the 22-year old who continued to overpower him and win the match in one hour 21 minutes.
Murray who won his first game since September, by defeating James Duckworth in the first round, put up a competitive first set against the Russian, but his lack of fitness and match practice eventually showed. The second set was more or less one-sided with Medvedev not looking back from a 4-0 lead before wrapping up the match.
Andy Murray, now ranked 240th in the world ranking conceded this week about how long he will continue in competitive tennis after a bout of hip surgery. Murray, a two time champion in Brisbane and one of the most popular players of the tournament looked upset as he waved to all sides of the stadium before leaving the court.
Medvedev now has to face Canada’s Milos Raonic who eased past Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic. The tournament lost another big name when Rafal Nadal pulled out due to a thigh strain.
