The Reds look to end their 29-year Title drought as Jurgen Klopp seems to have found the right ingredients for success. With a free-scoring attacking unit led by Mohamed Salah & the league’s tightest defense, Liverpool has the right balance which they lacked in recent title challenges. But with a very slim 4 point lead over Man City who seems to be back to their best, the question is – Will Liverpool be at the top by May?
Liverpool legend Ian Rush says the fans are quite right to be excited as they are in a position they haven’t been in a long time. On the team balance, he adds “It is no good scoring three goals if you let in four. I think they have tightened it up at the back. (Virgil) Van Dijk organizes the defence. Leave those three (Salah, Firmino, Mane) up front to do what they want.”
While Man City are ahead in goals scored, Mohamed Salah once again leads the golden boot race with 16 goals. The biggest improvement this season at Anfield has been at the back. They emerge superior in almost all parameters like tackles, duels & aerial challenges. The backing Klopp received from the board for expensive purchases of Allison & Van Dijk seems to be paying off.
The fixture list late in the campaign also seems to be more comfortable for Liverpool. And the reds need to concentrate only in the league and Europe after getting eliminated from both domestic cups. City, on the other hand, is competing on all four fronts. Though with their squad strength & superiority, you can never rule them out.
