Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has rowed back on his suggestion he purposefully got the yellow card against Ajax on Wednesday to make sure that he will be banned for the second leg.
With Real Madrid 2-1 up in the last-16 first leg, Ramos was shown the yellow card in the 89th minute which was the third one of the European campaign. This, in turn, leads to his suspension from the second leg of the tie in the Spanish capital on March fifth.
If they make it to the quarter-finals Sergio Ramos would then be cleared for the final stretch of Europe’s elite competition, which was monopolized by his team since 2016.
But following the win, he told the reporters, “The truth is that given the result I would be lying if I said it wasn’t something I had in my mind.”
UEFA rules state a player who intentionally obtains a booking can be banned for two games. Around an hour later Ramos appeared to row back on his statement on Twitter which says,” I want to make clear that it hurts me more than anyone, I have not forced the card, as I didn’t against Roma in my previous game in the Champions League.”
