Ajax Amsterdam clinched its 34th Dutch League title on Wednesday, one week after a last-minute loss to Tottenham in the Champions League semifinals.
Erik ten Hag’s side capped a memorable season with their first League title since 2014 with a 4-1 final day win at De Graafschap, three points clear of runner-up PSV Eindhoven which beat visiting Heracles 3-1. Ajax had been in a tight game against PSV over the last weeks but made all sure of the title on Sunday when they beat Utrecht while defending champions PSV lost. The latest victory ensured a massive plus 14 goals difference with them.
Lasse Schone and Nicolas Tagliafico ensured the title for Ajax with their first-half goals and Dusan Tadic then scored twice to reinforce the win.
Ajax performed an outstanding display of the game which will be the final appearance for midfielder Frenkie de Jong who agreed to sign for Barcelona for £65m and Captain Matthijs deLigt who is also expected to leave this summer.
Ajax ended with 86 points and 119 goals scored in 34 games while PSV collected 83 points to join them in next season’s Champions League.
