Neymar has been stripped of the Brazil captaincy for the Copa America 2019 which begins next month and will be replaced by his PSG teammate Dani Alves.
“Daniel Alves will be captain of the Brazilian National Team in the friendly matches against Qatar and Honduras and Copa America Brazil 2019”, the country’s football federation (CBF) has said.
The 27-year-old forward, who was handed a three-match suspension for lashing out at a spectator following Paris Saint-Germain’s shock defeat by Rennes in the French Cup final earlier this month, was informed by manager Tite on Saturday. He was also reportedly involved in a dressing room incident with his PSG team-mates.
Neymar missed the humiliating 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat against Germany in 2014 due to the injury after fracturing his back on the previous match. He was named as the Player of the tournament at the Confederations Cup a year earlier.
The Copa America starts in Brazil from June 14th to July 7th with Brazil taking on Bolivia, Venezuela, and Peru in Group A.
