The U.S women’s national soccer team beat the Netherlands in the 2019 Women’s World Cup on Sunday 2-0, after a month-long tournament which attracted more attention to the sport than ever before and also to the social issue surrounding the women’s league.
For the US team, it was yet another final, dominating over yet another opponent and claiming its fourth Women’s World Cup title in Lyon, France to repeat as world champions.
Megan Rapinoe, who wasn’t expected to appear in the finals due to a hamstring issue, wound up winning it instead, slotting home a penalty kick in the 61st minute. Midfielder Rose Lavelle sealed the victory 8 minutes later with a driving run up the center.
The 8th Women’s World Cup which started on June 7 was the most popular tournament ever wherein the opening match, the semi-finals, the finals all sold out within 48 hours and an estimated billion people tuned in for the matches.
The US was the dominant team from the beginning and the finals saw “an American invasion in Lyon” where fans decked out in stars and stripes which gave the US players a sense of home-court advantage.
