According to the reports from European Club Association (ECA), UEFA is still holding decision making session for approving the third continental club competition proposal, which is meant to commence in the 2021-22 season.
ECA chairman Andrea Agnelli stated that if the proposal is approved then this new tournament would give rise in the number of clubs playing on the European stage each season to 96, that is, a boost of 16.
The tournament will run alongside Champions League and the Europa League, but to avoid clashes in viewership, the tournament might be restructured.
Agnelli told the ECA General Assembly,”Pending approval of the UEFA Executive Committee, the ‘green light’ has been given to introduce a third competition, bringing the overall number of clubs to 96, as of the 2021-22 season.”
This new competition is meant to give a spotlight to teams from the continent’s weaker nations, which means, more international and less domestic games.
“A detailed assessment of the existing international match calendar is required prior to presenting a new model post-2024,” Agnelli added. “The current model needs modification to suit modern environment.”
