The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the schedule for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. The 16th edition of the tournament will take place from 31st March and the last league match will be played on 21st May. After a gap of three years, the home-and-away format will return in the upcoming edition of the Indian Cricket League. All 10 teams will play seven home and away matches during the league stage of the tournament. A total of 70 league matches will be played over 52 days in 12 venues.
The Chennai Super Kings will take on defending champions Gujarat Titans in the opening match of IPL 2023 at Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad on 31st March. The four-time IPL champions had a disappointing outing in the IPL 2022 as they finished ninth in the league stage of the tournament, Ahead of IPL 2022, R. Jadeja was appointed as the captain of Chennai but the team didn’t perform well under his leadership. Dhoni was reinstated as the skipper of CSK. Moreover, Chennai missed the services of D. Chahar who was out of action for the majority of 2022 due to a hamstring injury.
Ahead of the IPL 2023, Chennai revamped its squad intending to win the fifth IPL title. The franchise broke the bank to secure the services of B. Stokes at the auction and he is expected to play a key role in Chennai’s campaign in the upcoming IPL season. D. Chahar is likely to be available for the IPL 2023 after missing out on the previous season of the tournament. M. Dhoni will be leading Chennai in his likely final season of IPL.
Chennai is placed in Group B alongside Hyderabad, Gujarat, Bangalore and Punjab. The team will play against the other five teams in Group A twice and the remaining four matches will be played against the teams in the same group.
