The iconic Windies cricketer Chris Gayle addressed the media on the eve of their World Cup 2019 clash against India. He initially indicated that the India series at home will be his last and later took a U-turn on his retirement decision. But it is now reported that he will call it quits after the India series. Windies are scheduled to host Virat Kohli’s men after the ongoing World Cup for 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs and a couple of Test matches.
Though it is still not clear if the Universe Boss will play the Tests, as of now it seems that he will rest his bat from the international cricket eventually with his last game in the longest format of the game. However, Gayle will not play the T20 International series which is set to begin on August 3. The three-match ODI series between India and West Indies will commence on August 8 in Guyana. While the remaining two ODIs will be played on August 11 and 14 in Trinidad.
The two-match Test series is scheduled to start on August 22 in Antigua and the tour will conclude in Jamaica where the second and final Test match will take place. Interestingly, Jamaica is Chris Gayle’s home ground and there is every possibility that he might hang his boots by eventually playing the Test match. The man himself expressed his wish to play the India series in the pre-match press conference.
“It’s still not the end. We still have a few matches to go, and maybe another series after this so knows? We’ll see what happens. My plans after the World Cup?… I’ll maybe play a Test match against India, and then I’ll definitely play the ODIs against India. I won’t play the T20s. That’s my plan after the World Cup,” Chris Gayle said while speaking to the reporters in Manchester.
Moreover, the West Indies media manager Philip Spooner also confirmed that the 39-year-old will play his last series against India at home. “Yes, Chris will play his last series against India,” he said.
