Former Indian cricketer and Tamil Nadu opener, VB Chandrasekhar (57), committed suicide at his residence in Mylapore on Thursday evening, police said. His body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his bedroom and he had not left any suicide note.

The cricketer, who had invested in Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) and was managing Kancheepuram cricket team, is suspected to have suffered huge financial losses from his cricket businesses.

Police reported that his wife Soumya said that they had tea together as a family at 5 pm and went back to his bedroom on the first floor. When he did not open the door even after repeated knocking, she peeped through the window to find him hanging from the ceiling fan.

“He was in neck-deep debt, having invested Rs 3 crore in the TNPL team, VB Kanchi Veerans. He had even pledged his house as a surety and recently the bank had issued a notice for recovery and he was depressed since then,” an investigating officer said.

Popularly known as VB, he played a crucial role in the Tamil Nadu’s Raji Trophy victory in the year 1987-88.

Chandrasekhar who was aggressive opening batsman played for Goa also, before becoming the national selector, state coach, and commentator.

The BCCI and many former cricketers and current players expressed their condolences over his death.
