In a shock defeat, Sam Querry knocked out No 5 seed Dominic Thiem out of the first round of Wimbledon 2019.

After his clay-court success, Thiem was expected to have a strong run although he has never been past the fourth round. French Open finalist who has the caliber to shock the top players of the world became the third top-10 men’s seed to suffer a first-round exit from Wimbledon. He joins top seeds Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev in being toppled in the first round.

He proved once again that grass is not his to his best liking as he wilted under the expert serve and volley game of Querry. Although Thiem made a bright start on Court 2 as he dominated the first set 7-6(4), the big-serving Querry rallied to win the next three consecutive sets 7-6(1), 6-3, 6-0.

The American feels like there was a lot of pressure mounted on Thiem which allowed him to take more gambles.
“I know the grass is not his preferred surface, but I felt the pressure is on him. “It allowed me to swing freely”, said Querrey after the match.
