Roger Federer fights hard to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas on Thursday to give a chance to the defending champions Switzerland to retain their spot in the Hopman Cup final.
The 7-6(7/5), 7-6(7/4) win by the 20-time Grand Slam Champion in his men’s singles match gave the Swiss a 1-0 lead in the Group B and assured a spot in Saturday’s final despite eventually losing the tie.
The 37-year old Federer kept his unbeaten record this week intact against the 15th ranked Tsitsipas even when he found himself down 4-1 in the first set tie-break. He fought back and was given a set point for the double fault of the opponent. A delightful drop-shot sets three match points in the second tie-break.
Greece claimed a consolation victory of 2-1 when Maria Sakkari beat Belinda Bencic 6-3 6-4 in women’s singles and also won the mixed doubles 4-3(4), 2-4, 4-3(3) in the Fast4 format.
Federer will be going for his third Hopman Cup title when the Swiss team faces wither Australia or Germany in Saturday’s final match.
“There were very little unforced errors and it was a very good quality Tennis. For me, it is about maintaining a good level of play and I am happy with my game”, Federer said.
