Tim Paine’s team leveled the four-Test series in style as they crushed India’s lower order with a wall of hostile bowling on the fifth day on Tuesday.
The hosts captured the early ascendancy from the moment Paine won the toss and displayed dominance throughout the match despite a couple of inspired fightbacks including Virat Kohli’s first century on tour.
This was an act of sweet revenge from Australia for the nail-biting 31-run defeat at Adelaide and the first Test win after the ball-tampering scandal broke out in South Africa earlier this year.
India resumed at 5-112, having been asked to complete a record-breaking chase of 287, but was quickly packed up for 140.
The Australian wickets were shared around with the Man of the Match, Nathan Lyon(3-39) and Mitchell Starc(3-46) the pick of the bowlers.
“We are relieved as a team. It’s been hard work”, the Australian captain was seen telling the reporters.
“The first two Tests in the series were tough. It’s been a bruising test match. To get a win like this against the World No 1 players is something that boosts the confidence of our team.”
