The Austrian seventh seed will bag his career high of four in the Monday’s latest ranking and secured his first title at a Masters 1000 event.
“It just feels unreal what happened in the past 10 days “, Thiem said after the victory. “I came from a really bad form in all categories and now I am the champion of the Indian Wells.”
When the five-time Indian Wells champion, Roger Federer claimed the first set, the chance of winning looked blur for Liam who has lost his previous two ATP Masters 1000 finals. But luck was at his side this time when he smacked a forehand winner down the line to the opponent in the deciding set and took a 6-5 lead.
The 25-year-old Austrian fell on his back and covered his face with his hands when Federer netted on match point and lost in the finals of the Southern California desert for a second consecutive year.
Thiam paid tribute to Federer and said,” It is such a pleasure to compete with you, to learn so much from you and to play with one of the biggest legends of all time.”
