Indian Women’s T20 League is all set to become a reality as the first edition of the tournament is slated to take place from 4th March to 26th March 2023. The inaugural season of the tournament will witness five teams, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh will vying for the maiden title in order to set their mark in the Indian Women’s T20 League. A total of 23 matches, including Eliminators and Final, will be played across 17 days at venues in Mumbai – DY Patil Stadium and Brabourne Stadium.
DY Patil Stadium is one of the famous stadiums in Mumbai. It was built in 2008 and is located in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. DY Patil Stadium has a seating capacity of 55,000, making it the fourth largest cricket stadium in India after Narendra Modi Stadium (formerly known as Motera Stadium), Eden Gardens Stadium and Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The stadium is named after an Indian politician Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil. DY Patil hosted its first international match when India women’s team played against Australia women’s in December 2022. The two games of the three-match T20I series were held at this venue.
DY Patil Stadium served as the home ground for the Mumbai Indians and it hosted three IPL matches for the five-time champions in 2008. The stadium also hosted the 2008 and 2010 Indian Premier League Finals. The venue hosted 20 IPL matches in 2022. Apart from hosting cricket matches, DY Patil Stadium also hosted football matches. The venue is a home ground for Mumbai City FC. The stadium hosted football matches during the 2017 U-17 FIFA World Cup, 2022 U-17 Women’s FIFA World Cup and 2022 Women’s Asia Cup.
In the inaugural season of the Indian Women’s T20 League, DY Patil will be hosting 11 matches of the tournament. The stadium will be the home ground for Mumbai women’s team while serving as the away venue for UP, Gujarat, Bengaluru and Delhi. DY Patil Stadium hosted 27 T20 matches, including 20 IPL matches last year. The highest total recorded at this venue was 216/4 by Chennai Super Kings against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.
Talking about the pitch, DY Patil Stadium has a bouncy and genuine surface that can advantage the bowlers. The entire ground’s outfield has been tilled properly, with 200 tonnes of dirt imported from South Africa to create a bouncy surface. Such pitches may offer much more pace and bounce for the fast bowlers. However, the pitch might give an advantage to the batters as the floodlight towers are taller than usual, ensuring that the batters do not suffer from glare during evening matches. The afternoon matches may give an advantage to the team that wins the toss and opt to bowl first, while evening matches may help the batters even if they bat second.
