Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk wins England’s Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year to become the fourth player from the Netherlands to win the award.
Van Dijk has played a pivotal role in the Red’s thrilling title challenge with Manchester City this season and his performance was not gone unnoticed. H e was voted for by his peers ahead of Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling who instead won the Young Player of the Year honor.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for grand £75 million which was a world record for his position. He was part of the side that reached the Champions League final last term and an excellent defender who is the first centre-back since John Terry in 2004-05 seasons to win the prize.
Overall he played 36 League matches for Jurgen Klopp’s side this term and the defense improved massively compared to last season having seen it breached on just 20 occasions which is the best record.
The 27-year-old later said that this honor proved that “defending is as important as attacking.”
