Manchester City’s victory against 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers
An early goal and a red card for Willy Boly eased Manchester City’s progress towards a straightforward victory against 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 to cut Premier League leaders Liverpool’s advantage to four points on Monday.
Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring right after ten minutes when Leroy Sane ran on to a peach of a pass by Aymeric Laporte and squared for the Brazilian to slide home. The task was made even more complicated when Wily Boly was dismissed nine minutes later with a straight red card for a dangerous jumping challenge on Bernardo Silva.
Opportunity knocked for the dismayed Wolves with one goal against them and a man down at the 36th minute when Raul Jimenez showed strength to outmuscle Laporte and surge forward before slipping the ball into the path of Jonny Otto just inside the penalty area. His cross conquered the diving boots of Diogo Jota by inches and Manchester City was spared.
City reinforced their dominance when two minutes later when they won a penalty which Jesus converted for his second goal. While Manchester City racked up 870 passes as opposed to 271 of the Wolves and such was their control that keeper Ederson at one point joined in upfield during one passage of play in the second half.
City who have scored 99 goals in all the competitions this season needed this victory to suffice after Liverpool’s weekend win at Brighton & Hove Albion.
