Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Paris Masters, a move which will cost him World No.1 ranking which goes back to his familiar foe, Novak Djokovic next week.

Tournament organizers in Paris announced on Wednesday that Nadal has pulled out from the game due to his abdominal strain.

Speaking to the press conference on the same day Nadal said,” the last few days I was feeling a little bit of abdominal especially when serving. The doctor says that it is recommended to not play because if I continue the abdominal it can break and can be a major thing”.

Two years ago, Djokovic, lost his top ranking to Andy Murray at the Paris Masters. He was 215 ATP points behind Nadal in the standings. As he struggled to come back from his lingering elbow injury, the 31-year old Serb completely turned his form around winning four of the five tournaments that he played including the Wimbledon, the US Open and the Shanghai Masters. According to the ATP Tour, Djokovic’s marvelous rise makes him the first player since Marat Safin in 2000 to finish a season as No.1 after starting from outside of the top 20.
