India drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh who is currently in his best phase of the career has been named as Indian team’s captain for the Olympic Test event in Japan. The captaincy announcement came as a surprise to him but he said on Wednesday that he is up for the challenge and ready to take up responsibility in the upcoming event.
Harmanpreet will wear the armband of the captain in the Test event which starts on August 17 involving India, Malaysia, and New Zealand and hosts Japan after the regular skipper Manpreet Singh is rested along with few other senior players. “When I was told that I will be leading the team, it was a pleasant surprise. It is an honor and a big responsibility. I am excited and looking forward to the challenge,” he said.
Speaking about the task ahead, Harmanpreet who was part of India’s Junior World-Cup winning side in 2016 said,” We are well-prepared, having attended a special Goalkeepers Camp and Defenders Camp. We will be playing every match with the intent to win”.
Harmanpreet was part of the squad for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, where he was one of the youngest players and was adjudged as the Rising Player of the Tournament in the historic 2016 FIH Champions Trophy game.
