Saudi women not only participated in Special Olympics for the first time this year but also clinched the gold in basketball.

It was indeed an auspicious moment for each athlete of the team as they embraced each other, celebrating their victory as they won in their maiden appearance at Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi.

The team of 21 athletes made history by becoming the first- ever female participant from KSA to compete across various sports which includes basketball, Bocce, track and field, and Bowling.

The Saudi Arabian team won 16-11 versus its Ivorian counterpart in the finals finishing on top of the unified female PLYRD02 standings. While Ivory Cost took home the silver medal, Kuwait settled for Bronze.

“We are the first female athletes from Saudi Arabia. It makes us feel wow. It is one of the nicest moments of our life. 

“Yesterday we won, but it doesn’t matter if we lose also. Because at the end we always dance”, a member of the victorious team spoke to the media.

Saudi team which had 50 athletes including 21 women took home a national record-breaking total of 40 medals from the sporting event- 18 gold, 9 silver, and 13 bronze medals.
