Indian Squash reached new heights as Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa emerged as champions in the men’s and women’s sections respectively in the Asian Squash Championship on Kuala Lumpur.
An unprecedented feat that eluded the Indians in Chennai two years ago became a glorious reality in Malaysia for the second-seeded Joshna Chinappa as she successfully defended her title beating the top-seeded Annie Au of Hong Kong 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6.
The victory celebration doubled soon after when Saurav, the top seed and last year’s finalist ensured there was no slip this time as he defeated the fourth seed Leo Au Chun Ming from Hong Kong 11-9, 11-2, 11-8.
Not since September 2017 in the Hong Kong International Open has Joshna tasted success against Annie who has beaten her last month in Macau Open in straight games for her 12th win in 20 matches between the two.
“I thought I really played well in the final and I have lost to Annie few times prior to this. So I had come prepared and the court and the conditions helped. Most importantly I found the length and that was the key and I am very happy to defend the title,” said the victorious Joshna after the game.
Ghosal on the other hand, meticulously worked his way to a convincing win, never allowing his opponent for a fight worth and covered himself with glory, his maiden success at this level.
“I am happy to win the Asian title for the first time. I had come close in the past but did not cross the line. So it is hugely satisfying to win it for India,” Ghosal said.
