The top seed, Dominic Thiem suffered a shock loss in the Rio Open first round on Tuesday, going down 6-3, 6-3 to Laslo Djere.

In an upset-filled first round of the ATP Rio Open, there were contrasting results as Austria’s Thiem, the No 1 seed lost to the Serbian while second seed Fabio Fognini of Italy fell to Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime 6-2, 6-3. Also, third seed Italian Marco Cecchinato who won the Argentina OPpen on Sunday was crushed by Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene 7-5, 7-6(1).

Laslo Djere, the World No. 90 broke Thiem’s serve 5 times which was extremely shocking and surprising lackluster display from a man who has won 8 ATP titles on clay.

“I think, to be honest; he played a little worse than normal. But I had a great day. I felt the ball really well, hitting well from the baseline and then attacking well when it was time for that”, Djere said after the match.

“This was the biggest win of my career, so I am really happy right now”, the unheralded player who just had his first victory over a top 10 player told the media.
