WV Raman, the former opener of India is appointed as the coach for the Indian women’s cricket team, a source from BCCI ( Board of Control for Cricket in India) confirmed to PTI.
A selection committee, comprising of former captain Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad, and Shantha Rangaswamy previously has recommended the shortlisted names of Gary Kirsten and WV Raman to the Board. This was just after the end of Powar’s interim contract on November 30 after a bitter fallout with ODI captain and senior player, Mithali Raj over selection issues.
“Kirsten was the top choice of the ad-hoc selection committee but as the South African was not keen on giving up his plum job with IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, WV Raman got the job”, the BCCI official said.
The 53-year old Raman who currently working as batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore is one of the most qualified coaches in the country.
He has the tremendous experience of coaching Ranji Trophy teams like Tamil Nadu and Bengal, also had a stint with the India U-19 team.
Raman played 11 Tests and 27 ODIs is best remembered for being the first Indian to score a century in South Africa during the 1992-93 tour.
