Gafur Rakhimov, the newly elected AIBA ( International Boxing Association) has urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to accept an “Olive Branch” from his organization while promising to continue his efforts to save boxing’s Olympic status.
Gafur was elected as the president of the AIBA despite fears that his appointment could lead to the ejection of Boxing from the Olympic Games. He was previously the interim president, courted controversy after being linked to organized crime by the US Treasury Department.
In a statement issued Sunday night, Rakhimov said that the IOC’s concerns on the governance, anti-doping, and financial issues are being addressed.
“As an organization AIBA has made a lot of progress. We have move forward in our transparency, our governance, our statutes, our refereeing and judging rules, our anti-doping and our financial procedures. I am proud to say that we are compliant across the board.”
“We have heard you, we were listening to you and we have been learning a lot from you. We are committed to improving in any area that we are supposed to improve”, he added.
Rakhimov confirms that the election at Moscow last week was conducted in an entirely transparent way and the 67-year old Uzbek thanked the AIBA members for backing him up.
He said,” So, on behalf of the boxers of the World, we are extending to you an olive branch in the name of Olympism. AIBA and the Olympics belong together.”
