Following the departure of their long-time skipper Vincent Kompany, the Manchester City players have the opportunity to decide their next captain, says head coach Pep Guardiola on Wednesday. For the pre-season friendly win against West Ham 4-1, in China, midfielder David Silva captained the club but a permanent replacement is not yet made until all the squad is back from the summer breaks.
“They will choose their captain when we are all together. After they are all back, they are going to meet and decide who is going to be the next captain”, says Guardiola.
At Nanjing, Raheem Sterling scored a brace in the second half of the game as West Hams’s defense went extremely weak. While the West Ham took the lead with a Mark Noble penalty before City leveled with Silva’s score. Then Lucas Nmecha scored from the spot to give Manchester City the half-time lead. Regarding the captaincy, playmaker Kevin De Bruyne says he will be happy and honored to wear captains’ armband.
“If the team wants me to be the captain, or the club does, I would gladly accept it but I think that is something that everybody needs to talk about as a team, like a club”.
