The opening slot continues to be a cause of worry for India in test matches. Although many options have been tried & options continue to be available, fans seem to believe the solution is much closer to home than is being realized.

Rohit Sharma has not only cemented his place as an opener in the limited-overs format for India, but he has also become one of the most reliable players in that position in the world. There are not many dream teams he would not walk straight into. But his form in the longer format is a thing of worry. He has generally played in the middle order in Tests but has failed to replicate his performances from the shorter formats.

Australian Legend Adam Gilchrist also believes Rohit Sharma should open in Tests in India at least. “There is no reason why Rohit Sharma cannot be successful in Test cricket. In India, most definitely he can play as an opener. There might be more challenging times abroad in South Africa, England, and Australia,” said Gilchrist, responding to questions on selection committee chairman MSK Prasad’s view that Rohit could be tried as an opener in the longer format.

Earlier, M.S.K. Prasad the chief selector of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), had acknowledged that K.L. Rahul’s form in the Tests was a cause of concern for the team and Rohit Sharma will be considered to open the innings in the five-day format as well.
