Common Terms in Rummy Game

Rummy is a beloved, classic card game that has been around for centuries. If you’re new to the game, it can seem like a daunting task to learn all of its intricacies. While playing the game of rummy, one should’ve a basic understanding and knowledge of the terms or common terms in the game. If you are new to rummy, then it may seem quite difficult or challenging as it requires a lot of skills and tricks to win the real cash rummy game. The first step to start playing rummy is by understanding each and every term used in the game.

Terms in Rummy Game

Rummy is a card game that has been around for centuries. The object of the game is to remove all of the cards from your hand by creating sets and runs.

There Are a Few Different Types of Terms That Are Used in Rummy Games:

  • Set : A set is a group of three or more cards that have the same rank (e.g., 8, 8, 8).

  • Run : A run is a sequence of three or more cards in consecutive order (e.g., 4, 5, 6). The Ace can be high or low in a run, but it cannot be used as a middle card (e.g., Q, K, A is not a valid run).

  • Discard : This is when you get rid of a card from your hand. You must discard one card each turn, unless you can play a set or run.

  • Draw : This is when you take a card from the deck and add it to your hand. You can either draw from the face-down pile or the face-up pile (discarded cards).

There are also some general terms that are used in rummy games:

  • Hand : This is the group of cards that you are currently holding.

  • Stock : This is the face-down pile from which you draw cards. Once this pile is depleted, the game ends.

  • Face-up Pile : This is the pile of discarded cards.

Open Deck in Rummy Game

An open deck is a deck of cards that is not yet complete. In a game of rummy, an open deck may be used by any player at any time. An open deck may contain any number of cards, but usually contains between two and four suits.

Sequence in Rummy

A sequence is a combination of three or more successive cards in the same suit. The sequence in rummy is formed when the cards of the same suit are placed together. In a rummy game, there are two types of sequences - Pure Sequence and Impure Sequence. A player on the table must form a pure as well as impure sequence in order to declare the game after they complete all their melds.

  1. Pure Sequence
    The Pure Sequence is formed by a group of three or more successive cards of the same suit or set. But, wild or printed joker cannot be used while forming a pure sequence in Rummy Game.

  2. Impure Sequence
    An impure sequence is formed when a player uses a Joker card to form a sequence after running shorts on cards of the same suit. The importance of Joker can be seen in the game of rummy.
